Learn more about deep learning – theory, practise and a few lines of Python

Deep Learning is a recently reborn AI-method which revolutionises machine learning into near-human-level image classification, speech recognition, machine translation, autonomous driving, digital assistants and superhuman performance in some games like Go and has overtaken many traditional algorithms due to the simplicity. This is thanks to recent hardware improvements; particularly Nvidias graphical GPU boards, easy to access large datasets and algorithmic advances.

In this breakfast talk you will learn some theory and then practise how to read handwritten digits and classify movie reviews by using Google’s free Colab(oratory) cloud service (a free google/gmail user-id is required), so no need for buying hardware or do installations. After this presentation you can play effortless with many more exciting examples at home or work. We will use simple, just a few lines, Python-code, one of the most important programming language to learn 2019 if you haven't already. There will also be some examples of applications. Welcome!

Kalle Prorok, teacher, Umeå University

Please note: Separate sign up is needed for the breakfast seminar (no additional cost). More information will be sent out a couple of weeks ahead of the event.

Keynote: Tomomi Imura – Building Bots for Human with Conversational Interface

Using voice commands has been pretty ubiquitous nowadays, as more mobile phone users use voice assistants like Siri and Cortana, as well as devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home have been invading our living rooms. You can interact with the intelligent assistant without leaving your couch. At the same time, chatbots have been insanely popular, and services like Slack and Facebook Messenger let you achieve multiple tasks without leaving the client- you can schedule a meeting, order some pizza, call a taxi, etc.

Historically in web development, we have been relying on various UI elements to interact with your users. Now with the new technologies, you can develop rich applications with natural user interactions with a minimal visual interface. This enables countless use cases for richer and more accessible web applications.

In this talk, Tomomi Imura will talk about the examples of the conversational interface, and what and how you can build with JavaScript in a browser using the Speech API, the open web standard, also with Node.js to work with the 3rd party platforms!

Keynote: AI for Telecom and Beyond

Industries such as automotive, transportation and manufacturing present typical examples of cyber-physical systems, where the physical world is linked with the virtual world aiming at creating a desired global behavior in a collaborative manner. Such systems are becoming increasingly connected, providing new cross-domain business opportunities.

However, ubiquitous connectivity and heterogeneity of systems pose new challenges, as vast amounts of data and information from many sources will need to be analyzed, combined and actioned in a safe, ethical and transparent way. This creates complexity that goes beyond the capabilities of human management, and hereby, a need for intelligent automation. We will discuss AI-powered automated management of cyber-physical systems including examples for telecom and other industries.

Considerations for Enterprises Undertaking the Conversational AI Path

During the last few years we’ve heard from many people explaining why AI will be the next social revolution, and this claim has now been more or less accepted. The next step is to understand how to make this happen and some innovative companies have already started to work in this direction. However, against the backdrop of high expectations, the challenges for successful implementation are great and often hindered by a lack of experience and uncertainty of what is achievable.

This presentation will shed light on how to implement conversational AI and provide some guidelines to consider when undertaking this path. Based on real-life examples, Anna will explain the differences between simple FAQ chatbots and advanced intelligent conversational AI solutions that provide a clear ROI. She will explain the technologies that are needed and will share some best practices that will be useful when putting your ideas into practice.

How to Build Innovative Agile Organizations

Agile methods has become, at least on paper, the de facto method of how to make software these days. But organizations still struggle with them. How can we become more productive? How can we become more innovative? How can we integrate the service design perspective in all what we do? At the root of both agile and innovative work lies the ability to make experiments. To try new things we haven't tried before.

In this talk Ola Berg, Agile Guide at Squeed, will describe how you build the organizational capability of experimentation and innovation. What changes in our structure, changes in our procedures, and changes in our culture do we need to make?

AI for CTOs – How and When you could – and should – introduce AI

The world and especially technology is becoming AI-driven, at least if we are to believe the newspaper headlines. Everyone wants a piece of the AI cake – the investors, the buyers, the CEOs. But what does AI really mean and what does it take to start using it in practice, for real? When does it make sense to use/customize some of the existing AI solutions, when to develop new, proprietary AI, and when should one skip the AI and use more traditional methods instead? What are the hidden costs of AI?

In this matter-of-fact talk I will share my 15 years of experience of using different kinds of automation and AI in a wide range of industries, but from the highly pragmatic perspective of my current role as CTO. I will demystify the concept of AI and present an overview of different AI methods together with practical tips about how to approach everyday problems and choose the most fitting AI method to solve them. I will use some famous as well as infamous example to illustrate the most common pitfalls, and touch upon the ethical and environmental aspects of AI.

Securing APIs and Microservices with OAuth and OpenID Connect

Microservices present a new way of scaling API deployments, where each component is an island, performing a small but well defined task. These systems are quicker to develop and allow for a more agile way of working. As in most designs, security is not part of the original blueprint, which can lead to expensive and hard to manage security solutions.

In this talk, Travis Spencer will illustrate how OAuth and OpenID Connect can be leveraged to created a unified distributed framework for Microservices. He will show how this can be used to deliver Microservices’ promise of agility and scalability while also ensuring security.

Demo Session: How to Build an Artificially Intelligent Conversational Bot for your Enterprise

Building a bot is now common practice, but there is a huge difference between a simple chatbot and an advanced intelligent conversational AI solution that increasesuser satisfaction. Memory, context, disambiguation, small talk, intent identification and more are all needed to handle a human-like conversation with a machine. And once this is mastered, there are also requirements such as multi-channel, multi-language and multi-device that need solving. This session looks at the challenges that large enterprises face when implementing and scaling conversational AI solutions and highlights the key features that conversational AI platforms should provide. Attendees to this session will be eligible to join an exclusive 90-day evaluation program of the award-wining Teneo Fusion with free access to a sandbox environment. Semantic analysis of multimodal data – How to use AI in recognizing abstract concepts in digital media

Our media and communication infrastructures are being reconstructed to leverage advances in machine learning (ML). The goal is to increase process automatisation, and have ML systems with a semantic, or human-like, understanding of media content take on previously manual tasks.

The content is typically multimodal, in the sense that it is made up of a combination of text, images, sound, and metadata. In this talk, we survey state-of-the art analysis techniques and look at recent use cases in digital media.

Comprehensive integrated DevOps

Even though DevOps is not only about automation, but about culture as well, the tools lay the foundation for your success. The tools are a pre-requisite for you to start eliminating waste from your processes and start developing and releasing faster. Furthermore, once you have the base capability of automating things, you can use the data produced by that very same tooling to measure your successes and failures, learning from them and accelerating even further.

Mob Programming and the Power of Flow

Five people at one computer?! How can that possibly be productive? While this seems like a reasonable question, it's not easily answered - until we begin to understand the power of flow.

Mob Programming grew from the quest of one team to learn how to work well together. Once we started We almost immediately noticed that working this way provided better results in a variety of ways:

  • We were getting more, and more important things done
  • The quality of our work was increasing dramatically
  • Our knowledge, skills, and capabilities were improving rapidly
  • And all while we were having a lot of fun!

While we noticed these benefits and more, and it was clear this was in a large part due to working well together throughout the day - we didn't have an understanding of why this was working so wonderfully for us.

A hint came early on when we recognized we were achieving a one-piece flow - but we didn't realize the importance of this until we started exploring the meaning and power of "flow".

In this presentation we'll share the results of that exploration, and see if we can get a better understanding of Mob Programming and the power of flow.
